Still unbeaten in the NCAA, the CSB Blazers start building for the future by securing transferees Raffy Celis of Ateneo and SJ Moore of UST
MANILA, Philippines – College of St. Benilde, the only unbeaten team in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, continued to make the right moves.
The CSB Blazers secured the commitment of transferees Raffy Celis of Ateneo and SJ Moore of University of Santo Tomas, the team announced on Thursday, September 19.
Blazers coach Charles Tiu said both players, who will be eligible to play next season after the league’s required one-year sit-out for transferees, will be key parts of the team’s future.
Celis, a 6-foot-3 wingman, played six games for the Blue Eagles in the UAAP last season.
Moore, an athletic 6-foot-2 guard, saw action in 11 UAAP games for the Growling Tigers.
“I tried to recruit him (Celis) before he went to Ateneo,” said Tiu, noting he previously went to the hometown of the Cebuano standout along with Strong Group Athletics chiefs Frank and Jacob Lao.
“In fact, we already had an agreement in place, but at the last second, Ateneo gave a much better offer, and he decided to go there,” he added.
“Somehow things fell into place, and he will end up playing for us after all. He’s a really good player, and after playing and training under coach Tab (Baldwin) for the last year, I’m sure he’s gotten even better now.”
Tiu also cited Moore’s potential, noting the prospect’s impressive showing in the NBTC and the NCAA juniors.
“Like Raffy, he really caught my eye playing in the NBTC and even in the high school ranks of the NCAA,” said Tiu.
“I also tried to recruit him, but I know UST gave him a really good deal. Somehow, he wanted to transfer and move to us, so we will gladly welcome him. I had spoken to coach Pido (Jarencio) and have his blessing about SJ anyways.”
The Blazers hold the early solo lead in Season 100 with a 4-0 record. – Rappler.com
