How Tupperware became a part of our lives


MANILA, Philippines — Tupperware has been a part of my life since birth.

I wasn’t just raised in a home that used the brand — I was raised in the heart of it. From my earliest memories, I remember attending national conferences, captivated by live cooking demonstrations showcasing Tupperware products’ durability and reliability. I even recall being able to sell a cookware set when I was just seven years old. This shows how ingrained this brand has been in my upbringing. 

Our family has been in the Tupperware business for over 30 years. My mother started when she was just 18 years old, and today, we proudly run a Tupperware franchise. As business partners, we distribute Tupperware products and continue to mentor business managers, helping them expand and grow their ventures. We travel to different areas to support managers with recruitment, aiming to boost their sales and broaden their networks. It’s about building a strong community of entrepreneurs while keeping the legacy of Tupperware alive.

Losing a Tupperware was like losing a small treasure. But if I’m being honest, it was mostly my brother who’d be guilty of misplacing them. In my case, I have never lost a single one.

Recent financial struggles forced the company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. However, it is a measure that allows it to continue operations while restructuring.

Tupperware has been woven into the fabric of my life. Saturdays were my favorite as we would introduce new products and watch the eyes of our sales force light up with excitement. Our sales supervisor, Miss Vicky, would toss products on the ground, showing everyone how indestructible they were. The joy on everyone’s faces as they saw the products come out unscathed was priceless. 

But beyond the products, Tupperware gave my family a good life. It wasn’t just the containers or the bottles but the opportunities, the community, the friendships, and the deep sense of belonging. “Better lives and a brighter future” — their motto isn’t just a slogan to me; it’s a promise that Tupperware has fulfilled for my family. It’s the legacy that I continue to carry with pride. 

A lasting impact

“Huwag na huwag kang uuwi sa bahay hangga’t hindi mo nahahanap ‘yang Tupperware mo.” 

(“Don’t even think about coming home until you’ve found that Tupperware.”)

This stern reminder from Filipino moms has become a part of family life, often heard when a treasured Tupperware goes missing. From the iconic baunan (lunchbox) to dependable kitchenware, Tupperware has secured its place as a beloved staple in Filipino households and homes around the globe.

Some users have shared their sentiments on X, highlighting Tupperware’s significant role in their lives. One user mentioned that Tupperware had become a family heirloom, passed down through generations because of its durability and lasting quality.

“Ang tibay naman kasi sa true lang…kaya ‘di ka magpapalit. Dami ko nito kasi naman panahon ‘ata namin puro tupperware binibili ng nanay ko. Pinamana pa sa ‘kin.” the post read. 

(“In truth, it’s really durable…that’s why you don’t need to replace it. I have a lot of these because back in my day, my mom would always buy Tupperware. She even passed them down to me.”)

“Isang henerasyong mga kabataang Pilipino pinalaki netong Tupperware. Dito rin pinakatakot mga batang ‘yun kasi magagalit Mama nila pag nawala to kasama ng payong.”

Some netizens on Facebook also shared how significant Tupperware has been in their lives. For many, the memories of their moms getting upset over a lost Tupperware or their moms’ obsession with protecting the containers have become amusing stories to share.

For others, selling Tupperware products has been a reliable source of income over the years. Whether it’s through funny anecdotes or providing financial support, Tupperware has always been a part of our family and our everyday lives.

Business with a heart

Founded by Earl Tupper in 1946, Tupperware revolutionized food storage with its airtight seal, designed to keep food fresh for longer. For decades, every mom’s reliable kitchen companion has ensured meals stay just as fresh as when they were first prepared.

Tupperware operates as a direct-selling business, which goes beyond merely selling products — it focuses on building and nurturing relationships. Unlike traditional retail, where transactions are limited to buying and selling, direct selling fosters a deeper sense of community and connection. It’s not just about moving products; it’s about empowering individuals, offering training, and helping people grow personally and professionally.

Through this model, Tupperware has created a network of sellers who support each other like family. Many of us have a Tita, Mama, or a Lola who once sold Tupperware, which shows its deep roots in our communities. 

These women sold products and gained confidence, developed business skills, and became leaders in their circles. Tupperware has been more than just a brand — it’s been a vehicle for personal and economic growth, passing down opportunities from generation to generation.

Tupperware mom and business manager Mary Grace Laude shared her thoughts and fondest memories of being both a user and seller of Tupperware. “Naalala ko dati sobrang daming incentives ng company tapos marami rin ako na meet na mga dealers ko na ngayon na umaasa, ito ang bread and butter namin lahat.” 

(I remember that the company used to offer so many incentives, and I met so many of my dealers who now rely on this as their bread and butter, just like I do.)

For many Tupperware moms like Mary Grace, Tupperware has provided a livelihood and fostered a sense of community and empowerment. It’s a legacy of resilience and entrepreneurship that continues to shape lives.

As Tupperware continues to evolve in the face of changing times, its impact on Filipino homes remains undeniable. From a simple food storage solution to a symbol of family tradition and empowerment, Tupperware has become deeply woven into the fabric of our lives. Whether passed down as heirlooms, shared in stories, or used to build livelihoods, 

Tupperware has proven its lasting legacy. Though the brand may face new challenges, one thing is certain: the memories, connections, and community it has fostered will endure for generations to come. – Rappler.com
