Defending NCAA men’s basketball champion San Beda wrecks JRU after a historic loss to EAC, while the rising Generals fail to retain momentum as Perpetual takes over late
MANILA, Philippines – Reigning NCAA men’s basketball champion San Beda released its pent-up anger after a historic loss to rising EAC, pounding hapless JRU to a therapeutic 77-60 blowout in the continuation of Season 100 at the FilOil EcoOil Centre on Saturday, September 21.
Veteran Yukien Andrada led the way with a dreamlike line of 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and no turnovers with a huge +31 plus-minus as the Red Lions regained a winning record at 3-2, right behind unbeaten St. Benilde (4-0) and last season’s finalist Mapua (3-1).
Bryan Sajonia added 14 points in just 20 minutes, while Finals MVP James Payosing and Jomel Puno scored 13 apiece.
Shawn Argente was the Heavy Bombers’ lone bright spot in the loss that sent them to a 1-4 slate with a game-high 27 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 4-of-10 from three in just 25 minutes of action. Marvin Raymundo was a distant second on the scoring tally with 8 points on a putrid -24 plus-minus.
Meanwhile, EAC failed to build momentum on its first-ever win over San Beda as the Perpetual Help Altas edged out a 73-67 win in the first game to tie San Beda with a 3-2 record.
Fast-rising star Mark Gojo Cruz led the way with a well-rounded line of 18 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals, as Christian Pagaran likewise stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 9 boards, and 4 dimes.
King Gurtiza paced the loss that sent the Generals down the standings at 2-3 with 17 points and 8 rebounds in 25 minutes, while Gil Quinal and Wilmar Oftana scored 16 and 15, respectively, both on 5-of-15 clips.
