MANILA, Philippines – Over 750 young talents look to showcase their wares when the 9th STY International Gymnastics Cup rolls off from October 18 to 20 at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex in Muntinlupa City.
Rising gymnasts from Manila, Ifugao, Davao, Cebu, Bicol, Bacolod, Bataan, and Quezon, as well as Asian bets from Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and India vie for top honors in the largest international gymnastics club meet in the country.
With the excitement on Carlos Yulo’s double Olympic gold, the competition hopes to open doors to more Filipino gymnasts in both the local and international arena.
“This year we saw an increase in number of gymnasts, and we have for the first time, opened the men’s artistic gymnastics category. It is so refreshing to see renewed enthusiasm in this sport,” said Normita “Boots” Ty, head coach and founder of PGAA STY, the tournament host.
The opening ceremony is set on October 18 at 5 pm, while the competition proper runs from October 19 to 20, from 7 am to 7 pm, featuring women’s artistic gymnastics levels 1 to 7 and men’s artistic gymnastics levels 1 to 3.
“Last year we welcomed over 500 gymnasts here in the Philippines and in other countries, and I am looking forward to this year seeing more promising athletes showcasing their skills in the competition, making new friends and learning from each other,” said Ty, who established the PGAA STY Gymnastics Center in 2008.
The grassroots training program is supported by the city government as scholars under the Muntinlupa Gymnastics Club also train and compete alongside the PGAA STY delegation.
“We see the potential of gymnastics in the country which has also led us to expand our gym just this year in Carmona, Cavite,” said Ty.
“We want to make gymnastics accessible to more people to cultivate a new generation of athletes. By opening this new facility we are able to provide top-notch training, and a supportive environment for gymnasts to thrive.”
