‘We are forever grateful for the success of Ghost of Tsushima, and we can’t wait for you all to experience Ghost of Yōtei in 2025,’ says developer Sucker Punch

MANILA, Philippines – Ghost of Tsushima, released in 2020, is among the best-selling games for the PS4, with 9.73 million units sold, based on figures announced by developer Sucker Punch back in 2022.

In its lifetime, it has remained one of the most highly regarded titles for the platform, with fans loving the package of strategic sword-swinging action, breathtaking visuals, and the story of a samurai “relaxing” his code of honor to adopt stealthy “ghost” tactics to fight off the invading Mongol horde in Japan’s Tsushima Island.

Such reception, based on sales and sentiment, often results in sequels in the games industry, and so the rule now applies to Tsushima, with a sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, announced at PlayStation’s State of Play event on Wednesday, September 25.

Those looking to go on more adventures as Tsushima’s Jin Sakai will have to put such plans on hold. Yōtei will not be a continuation of the events from Tsushima and will be a new story set in the year 1603, with a new hero known as Atsu. Tsushima took place in the year 1274.

“Our story is set in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, a towering peak in the heart of Ezo, an area of Japan known as Hokkaido in present day. In 1603, this area was outside the rule of Japan and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers. It’s a far cry from the organized samurai clans who lived in Tsushima, and it’s the setting for an original story we can’t wait to tell,” Sucker Punch wrote in its blog

But while Yōtei takes players to a new setting, the developers said there is a core Ghost experience in the game. “When we set out to make a new Ghost game, we wanted to maintain the core pillars established in Ghost of Tsushima: playing as a wandering warrior in Feudal Japan, offering freedom to explore at your own pace, and highlighting the beauty of the world,” they said.

They “wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask and uncovering a new legend.”

Yōtei will be Sucker Punch’s first game built from the ground up for the PS5. Tsushima came out at the tail end of the PS4’s life and had a version that had visual and performance enhancements for the PS5. With Yōtei being exclusively developed for the PS5, gamers will be looking forward to, among other things, how beautiful the game will look.

The developers said, “We’re excited to build on the visual foundation we established in Ghost of Tsushima by making the world feel even more real.”

“We have massive sight lines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation, and more improvements we’ll share in the future. Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”

“We are forever grateful for the success of Ghost of Tsushima, and we can’t wait for you all to experience Ghost of Yōtei in 2025.”

The September 2024 State of Play event also saw the announcement of new Astro Bot levels, a remastered Horizon Zero Dawn, an Alan Wake 2 expansion, a new online action RPG ArcheAge Chronicles, remastered RPG series Lunar, and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi’s new RPG Fantasian Neo Dimension.
