At the ongoing Synod on Synodality, Vatican doctrinal chief Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández says allowing women deacons needs further study
MANILA, Philippines – One of the raging debates in the Catholic Church is whether or not women can be ordained deacons.
Deacons are ordained ministers who assist Catholic bishops and priests. They can preach, perform baptisms, solemnize marriages, and preside over wake or funeral services, but are not allowed to lead celebrations of the Mass.
During the Synod on Synodality at the Vatican on Wednesday, October 2, the Vatican’s doctrinal chief Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández reported the analysis of a group tasked by Pope Francis to study the issue.
