MANILA, Philippines – If things go according to plan, student-athletes of the National Academy of Sports (NAS) will get a chance to pick the brain of gymnastics superstar Carlos Yulo.
Yulo said he is willing to hold training camps with NAS scholars as he aims to impart his expertise to the future of Philippine sports after visiting the campus in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac, for the first time on Monday, October 7.
Reaping the benefits of his years-long training in Japan and in other parts of the world, Yulo became the Philippines’ first Olympic double gold medalist by reigning in the floor exercise and vault in the previous Paris Games.
“I would love to visit and do training camps with the students. I can also do cross-training in different sports because I need that experience as an athlete,” Yulo said in a mix of Filipino and English.
“I’ll gain knowledge and I’ll be able to share my experiences in Japan, the experiences I’ve had in winning, and of course, the things I’ve struggled with. I want to share those with them.”
Gymnastics has gained national popularity through the years as Yulo, a standout of the Palarong Pambansa who developed into a world champion, rose to stardom.
Out of the 229 student-athletes enrolled at NAS for the 2024-2025 school year, nine are under the gymnastics program.
The sport is expected to get more attention once the gymnastics center at NAS is completed next year.
“I’m hoping and praying that there are a lot of student-athletes from here who can compete and see what the international level is,” said Yulo.
Yulo paid the campus a visit as part of the program that saw fast food giant Jollibee pledge P5 million worth of athletic equipment to the NAS.
