‘Some women sense a call to priesthood,’ says delegate at Vatican summit

Sister Mary Teresa Barron, a delegate at the Vatican’s monthlong Synod on Synodality, called for further discussion on the ordination of women in the Catholic Church

MANILA, Philippines – The ordination of women in the Catholic Church remained a hot topic at a historic Vatican summit, even if Pope Francis had assigned a study group to separately examine the issue.

Sister Mary Teresa Barron, a delegate at the Vatican’s monthlong Synod on Synodality, called for further discussion on the ordination of women in the Catholic Church

“Even if at the moment, we many not be looking at ordained ministry, I think what I would say about that is, we tend to look at it from the question of: Can women or can they not be ordained in the church today?” said Barron, president of the International Union of Superiors General, in a press conference on Monday, October 7.

She continued, “I think we have to look at the question very much from the spirit: Is the spirit calling women? Because some women do sense a call to the priesthood or diaconate.”
