MANILA, Philippines – Hergie Bacyadan marked her foray into kickboxing with a golden feat.

One of the five Filipino boxers who represented the country in the Paris Olympics, Bacyadan ruled the women’s K1 -70kg category in the Asian Kickboxing Championships in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Saturday, October 12.

Bacyadan struck gold via abandonment as China’s Teng Jinwei pulled out from the final.

The pride of Kalinga advanced to the final after making quick work of Cambodia’s Raksa Samnang by way of a first-round technical knockout win.

A multi-sport athlete, Bacyadan also thrived in wushu and vovinam.

Bacyadan, 29, won silver in the 2017 World Wushu Championships and gold in the 2023 Vovinam World Championships before she returned to boxing and qualified for the Olympics.

Aside from Bacyadan, Jovan Medallo and Carlo Von Bumina-ang delivered gold medals for the Philippines.

Medallo snagged a pair of mints in the men’s musical form with weapon and men’s musical form open hand on top of a bronze in men’s creative form with weapon, while Bumina-ang topped the men’s low kick -67kg class.

Janah Jade Lavador bagged three bronzes, while Renalyn Dacquel (women’s low kick -48kg), Lance Airon Villamer (men’s point fighting -63kg), and Daryl Chulipas (men’s full contact -51kg) each won a bronze. – Rappler.com
