Typhoon Marce (Yinxing) has been snail-paced since Wednesday morning, November 6, lingering east of Cagayan
MANILA, Philippines – The provinces of Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte should brace for intense to torrential rain from Typhoon Marce (Yinxing) in the next 48 hours, the weather bureau said on Wednesday evening, November 6.
Marce was last spotted 260 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, at 7 pm on Wednesday. The typhoon is slowly moving northwest and has been snail-paced since morning.
So far, it continues to have maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 185 km/h.
But the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Marce is “approaching its peak intensity,” which could be maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h.
The typhoon is expected to maintain its slow pace while heading northwest over the waters east of Cagayan on Wednesday evening, before gradually speeding up westward from Thursday, November 7, to Saturday, November 9, over the Babuyan Channel and the northern portion of the West Philippine Sea.
Marce might make landfall and cross Babuyan Islands and/or the northern parts of mainland Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Apayao from Thursday afternoon to early Friday morning, November 8. The typhoon may also just pass very close to these areas instead of making landfall, but note that in both scenarios, it would still have a serious impact.
PAGASA added that Marce may slightly weaken “due to possible interaction with the terrain of mainland Luzon,” but it is expected to remain a typhoon.

The weather bureau reiterated that floods and landslides are likely.

In addition, there is still a high risk of “life-threatening” storm surges “with peak surge heights exceeding 3 meters above normal tide levels” in Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union in the next 48 hours.

Marce is the Philippines’ 13th tropical cyclone for 2024, and the first for November. It may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday evening.
