MANILA, Philippines – Fewer areas are seeing heavy rain from the southwest monsoon or habagat on Thursday, September 19, but the weather bureau warned that floods and landslides are still expected.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its 11 am advisory on Thursday that the southwest monsoon will continue to affect the following areas:

Thursday noon, September 19, to Friday noon, September 20

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 millimeters): Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, Occidental Mindoro

Friday noon, September 20, to Saturday noon, September 21

Saturday noon, September 21, to Sunday noon, September 22

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte

In other areas in Luzon as well as the Visayas, there may be isolated to scattered rain and thunderstorms on Thursday, also due to the southwest monsoon.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Benison Estareja said early Thursday morning that the weather bureau is monitoring cloud clusters located east and west of the Philippines, which might develop into low pressure areas in the coming days.

But for the next 24 hours, added Estareja, PAGASA is not expecting any new tropical cyclone.

So far, the country has had eight tropical cyclones in 2024, with four of them in September alone:

  • Enteng (Yagi), which made landfall in Aurora and crossed Northern Luzon as a tropical storm, then left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as a severe tropical storm
  • Ferdie (Bebinca), a tropical storm that stayed inside PAR for just 8 hours but enhanced the southwest monsoon
  • Gener, a tropical depression that made landfall in Isabela, then crossed Northern Luzon
  • Helen (Pulasan), a tropical storm with a track similar to that of Ferdie — no direct effect on the country, but also enhanced the southwest monsoon

Gener and Helen both left PAR on Wednesday, September 18. – Rappler.com
