The FEU Tamaraws, leaning on a young roster of six rookies and a new coach in Sean Chambers, hope to have picked up some ‘valuable’ lessons as they aim for a better second-round run

MANILA, Philippines – Keeping a positive mindset is on top of FEU head coach Sean Chambers’ list ahead of the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball second round.

After the Tamaraws wrapped up the first round with a dismal 1-6 record, Chambers hopes his players picked up all-important lessons from their early season struggles.

“I know I’m going to sound like a broken record, but as I just told the guys, these are valuable learning lessons for all the young guys,” said Chambers.

“All these are just going to continue to be lessons for the young group as we continue to move forward,” he added.

The youthful Tamaraws integrated six rookies — Veejay Pre, Janrey Pasaol, Jedric Daa, Adam Nakai, Jayden Jones, and Mohamed Konateh — into their rotations this season.

Their lone win so far came against the Ateneo Blue Eagles in an overtime thriller

Along with the lessons learned, Chambers hopes his players find some sense of urgency when the second round rolls off.

“I want them to manufacture that sense of fear in them to become successful, especially after that first win against Ateneo. We cannot relax,” Chambers said.

FEU star guard Jorick Bautista also wants to see a more improved Tamaraws ahead of what’s anticipated to be a tougher second round.

“We need to be more mature and more solid on the court,” Bautista, who leads the team in scoring after the first round with an average of 13.14 points, said in Filipino.

“We need some more toughness in us. We need to be courageous, especially down the stretch, where we usually get rattled.” Bautista added.

But Chambers, himself a rookie coach, plans to stay patient with the team’s growth, knowing that the learning process takes time.

“Again, just a lot of young guys [in the team] who are just trying to figure it out,” he said. – Rappler.com
