Leveled up vivo V40 5G features that got us way too excited

The vivo V40 5G was just launched. Here are the highlights you need to know about the phone and how to buy it!

In a twist that no one expected, vivo started teasing a new line of phones to add to their V-series only six months after the release of the vivo V30. We got our hands on one of these new devices, the vivo V40 5G. And this phone has got us giddy.

Just like its predecessors, the vivo V40 5G is a beautifully designed device. At 7.58 mm thick, it is to date vivo’s slimmest phone with a 5500 mAh BlueVolt battery (a bump from the V30’s 5,000 mAh). The phone is also lightweight and has a 3D curved screen which helps give it a good grip.

The vivo V40 5G is available in three colorways: Nebula Purple with its rich and cosmic tones, Stellar Silver with touches of elegance and sophistication, and Sunglow Peach which exudes fun and warmth.

One of the most notable differences between this and the previous V devices is the camera bump. Gone are the rounded square bumps that housed the rear camera lenses. This season, we see a refreshing and updated Gemini Ring design with a more circular layout (vivo really liked it and put a ring on it ?).

Another difference we noticed is the availability of the ZEISS lenses in the vivo V40 5G as this used to be exclusive to the Pro line for the vivo V series.

Even better ZEISS co-engineered lenses

With the vivo V30 Pro series, we got to experience firsthand what the ZEISS collaboration made possible. The cameras produced great images for various scenarios in terms of color, exposure, and detail.

We took the vivo V30 Pro’s ZEISS Triple Main Camera on a test run

This time, vivo is bringing this experience plus more to their baseline vivo V40 5G models, and we’re excited about it.

First, the vivo V40 5G gets three camera lenses that have met ZEISS Optics standards which produces professional-level portrait photos. On the rear, you get a 50 MP ZEISS OIS Main Camera and a 50 MP ZEISS Ultra Wide-Angle Camera. Meanwhile, you also get a 50 MP ZEISS Group Selfie front camera.

The rear camera lenses promise great all-around performance even in low-light conditions, while the front camera boasts wide-angle capabilities so you can get more people in your selfies with ease.

A new feature we’re getting with the renewed vivo and ZEISS collaboration is ZEISS Multifocal Portrait which integrates focal lengths commonly used in portrait photography. You can use this by opening your camera app, switching to Portrait Mode, and choosing the appropriate focal length for the occasion. For example, you can use the 24 mm focal length for portrait photos where you also want to show off the scenery, the 35 mm for intimate photos with some elements from the background, and the 50 mm for an even closer and more intimate shot.

With the vivo V30 Pro, we also got introduced to a roster of portrait modes that recreate ZEISS bokeh lens filters Biotar, Cinematic, Cine-Flare, Sonnar, Distagon, and Planar. With the vivo V40, we now also get B-Speed which creates a rounded triangle bokeh from light sources behind a subject.

Then, vivo and ZEISS also made it possible to use these bokeh filters in videos. With some AI-driven depth calculation, the camera is now also able to create a more natural blur effect that keeps the subject isolated from the background. There’s also an option to switch on a 2.39:1 aspect ratio to further drive that cinematic appeal.

AI Aura Light Portrait and AI 3D Studio Lighting

vivo redefined what a flash bulb can do for mobile phone photography with the introduction of the Aura Light a couple of years back. Now they’re redefining it again as vivo’s iconic Aura Light gets an AI upgrade.

The Aura Light in the vivo V40 5G is designed to give a 33% increase in brightness compared to the V30. Then with AI enhancements through AI 3D Studio Lighting, the camera system now also uses 3D facial light analysis to provide a virtual fill-light – giving the physical fill light a virtual enhancement to help take natural-looking photos. This is a great combination to use in challenging lighting situations like low light or backlighting.

Powered-up battery, chipset, and cooling system

Aside from increasing the phone’s battery capacity to 5,500 mAh, vivo also made use of their BlueVolt Battery technology which not only helps keep the phone slim but also improves its efficiency. And yes, it still has FlashCharging at 80W.

The vivo V40 5G is also equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon® 7 Gen 3 paired with the Ultra Large VC Smart Cooling System which makes use of vapor chambers. This means the phone will run smoothly whether you’re playing games, making content, or watching movies.

It also has dual speakers that produce 3D stereo sound and a 1.5K ultra-clear display with a 120 Hz refresh rate and up to 4,500 nits peak brightness.

The vivo V40 5G is also water and dust-resistant up to IP68.
