Nicknamed Pinay5, the Philippine women’s futsal team can only vie for a bronze at best after absorbing a second loss in the ASEAN tournament

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines bid goodbye to its ASEAN Women’s Futsal title hopes after bowing to Vietnam, 6-1, on Tuesday, November 19, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The loss meant that the Pinay5 could only finish with a bronze at best as they fell to last place with a 0-2-1 win-loss-draw record.

But to pull that off, host Philippines will have to win by two goals against Indonesia on Wednesday, November 20, to advance to the battle for third versus, most likely, the same Indonesian team.

Otherwise, the Filipinas will end the inaugural five-nation tournament as the last-placed team.

World No. 11 Vietnam (3-0), meanwhile, advanced to the championship match against the similarly unbeaten Thailand (3-0) with one more game remaining on their schedule.

The Philippines kept within striking distance at halftime as Vietnam only had one goal courtesy of Tran Thi Lan Mai at the 7:20 mark of the first half.

But Tran completed her brace in the second half, sparking Vietnam’s five-goal tally to pull away for good.

Alisha del Campo scored the lone goal for the Philippines at the 15:57 mark of the second half, but the Pinay5 could not keep up with Vietnam’s offensive firepower.

Earlier, Indonesia dominated Myanmar, 7-0, for their first win in the regional tournament.

If the Philippines could not secure a two-goal difference in their match versus Indonesia, Myanmar would play for the bronze medal.

The medal rounds, including the championship game, will be on Thursday, November 21, at the same venue. – Rappler.com
