Thailand proves just as strong in futsal action, blanking the Philippines in the ASEAN women’s tourney

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines suffered a lopsided beatdown against powerhouse Thailand, 7-0, on the second day of the ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship on Sunday, November 17, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Sangrawee Mekham led the world No. 6 Thais with two goals to steer the squad to their second straight victory after beating Indonesia on Saturday, November 16.

Mekham scored the opening goal at the 14:38 mark of the first half before Sawitree Mamyalee and Paerploy Huajaipetch widened the gap off free kicks, 3-0.

The Philippines’ Lyka Teves came close to giving the Pinay5 their lone goal, but bungled a kick from short range.

Darika Peanpailun then gave the Thais their fourth goal to close out the half with a commanding lead.

Lalida Chimpabut continued the Thais’ onslaught, before Mekham connected on her second goal with 11:49 left in the game for a 6-0 barrage.

Thailand capped off the blowout with Artkla Nattamon scoring in the final minute to silence the goal-hungry Filipino crowd.

The loss kept the world No. 59 Filipinas winless after settling for a draw in their opener against Myanmar, 2-2.

Earlier, Vietnam took down Myanmar, 5-2, picking up its first win in the five-nation tournament where only the top two teams will play for the title.

The Pinay5 slid to fourth place as Myanmar holds a superior goal difference.

The Philippines will be back in action against Vietnam, hoping to keep its chances alive for the tournament’s final round. – Rappler.com
